Clinical skills for midwifery practice: female urinary catheterisation

I have been having some discussion with colleagues about recording demonstrations of midwifery clinical skills and posting them on YouTube. But having carried out a search, I have found a number of videos already posted there. Here are a couple of links to videos demonstrating urinary catheterisation.

The video by 'Sterilefield' uses a model to demonstrate catheterisation. Unfortunately I am unable to embed the video into this blog to show you. This video that I have linked to demonstrates on a live woman. For that reason, I have provided the link only.

'Sterilefield' also has videos demonstrating subcutaneous and intramuscular injections and sterile gloving. I have not looked at these videos, so cannot comment on the quality of information.

If you are interested in hand washing, Carolyn has been blogging about it and has posted some resources about how to hand wash adequately. For non-medical people, it is really important that we teach proper hand washing to all health professionals - inadequate hand washing leads to an increase of infection. This can have deadly results for women who are giving birth.

If you know of any good videos of clinical skills, particularly related to midwifery practice such as abdominal palpation, vaginal examination, cannulation and perineal suturing, please let me know.

Thanks for that, Carolyn. I'd like to know what you think: do we still go ahead to do our own videos when there are videos already on YouTube?

I think we give our experts (terry and nick) a list and get them to find existing resources for us - then we go thru them all and see which ones we want - if wee are left with gaps or ant additional ones - we can then just focus on these - to save us reinventing...

we have funding for terry and nick to spend time doing this for us - our time would be best spent going thru the course and deciding what we want them to find for us.
